"I was smacked as a kid, never did me any harm". But is this really true? Hitting an adult is seen as violence or abuse, but is this different with children? Should we smack our kids? Were you smacked as a child? Do you smack your own children? Should it be made illegal?

there must be control
it never did me any harm....
No. there are other ways 2 deal with them. and once u start dealin with punishments with smakin u can end up usin it every time.
Now as a parent, to give your young child a light slap on the hand to teach them their not allowed to touch something is ok.
I also think it's acceptable when a child gets a smack on the bottom when he or she is having a temper tantrum because it can't get his or her own way.
If you don't smack them, they KNOW they will get what they want each and every time they throw a fit,
Teach them respect and discipline, but don't go over the top and abuse them.
David, you definitely had a horrible upbringing and I'm afraid my kids would have had the same type of upbringing if I wouldn't have kicked their father out in the end.
There is a big, BIG difference between smacking your child or beating the snot out of it.
Like I see many time at our neighbours...it's disgusting...their F***ing and jeffing in front of those kids, I saw their oldest lad being punched in the face by the dad, he send him flying across the square, yet, social came...interviewed the kids, they all tell them what their parents want them to tell them and social is happy and leaves them alone, they don't do anything, in fact they go and fetch them XMas presents and shopping vouchers....WTF??
Next thing in the news...yet another child died due to child abuse and social will stand there and say: "but the family seemed fine, we came to visit once a week, yes the house stunk and everything was dirty, but the kids 'told' us they were happy!"....makes you want to gavomit
I have smacked my children in the past, but that was when they were a lot younger and only a tap on the hand to stop them from touching things they shouldn't touch.
I rather smack a toddlers hand, then having to take him or her to the emergency room, because he/she burned her fingers on the oven door or managed to get something else stuck in their fingers.
David from Heaton, so sorry to hear about the awful childhood you all had to suffer. Sincerely hope you have a good life now.

Is smacking acceptable?
