Should you have a job to get a council house?

Britons in social housing who aren’t working or actively seeking employment should be kicked out, according to new housing minister Caroline Flint. Do you agree?

Why shouldn't they have a job. Why should they be allowed to sit on their backsides and live off the tax that the workers pay. The main reason they wont work is because they will lose their benefits. If they worked they would have no rent free accommodation, no free school meals, not free prescriptions and no income support. Why do they need to work when they earn more than the average working person just by sitting on their bums. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of Council House people who do work but there are hundreds more that dont and wont. If the government didn't subsidise these people then there would be more money available for those that genuinely needed it. I know of girls who get pregnant, eventually get a council house and then sit on their bums doing nothing but collect their benefits, spend them and do not a lot else. They get more benefits by being single parents and when it is all worked out they get more in beneits than in wages if they actually went to work. So I am sorry to say that I agree all that are able to work and who live in council house should be made to work. Those that are genuine and cannot work I appologise to.

To Biggles. You say you shouldnt be made to get a job? What nonsense. Yes, I can understand that you have had a bad time, but the reality is that you ARE a doley now, kept by the taxpayers. There must be some job you can do and get a bit of pride back by keeping your family instead of the taxpayers keeping them.

should we have to pay for home owners who buy a property they can not afford ? I am retired and live mostly off my interest on savings made whilst stupidly working hard and saving, Now this government reduce the interest rate to help the people who purchased property they could not afford, the same people who last year would sit in a pub boring us all with there self ego boosting talk of , MY HOUSE is NOW WORTH ? they are not so big headed now prices are getting to a more normal level the question should ,council tenants have to get a job is an insult it should be should people buy houses then expect us all to pay for them, and lets be honest most of you people that say you own your home DonT the bank does

BJ from Manchester. Thanks for your comment and it looks as though that you've come against the same delema I did. I've never asked for anything from the state either. My house was mortgaged and was our security for the future
When I needed the support I never got it and had to cut back financially which made the rest of my familly suffer! Though rather have the indignity of the baliffs evicting us I had to sell our house at a huge loss, just to clear the mounting debts, caused by my illness and the lifestyle we led, which wasn't extravigent but my kids got what they needed!
I'm not a bitter type of person but I agree that I see families from ethnic backgrounds getting a lot more help and payments than we did.
I used to be a very proud man to serve Queen and country and being part of the post card image that this country likes to project to other countries (such as been part of the changing of the guard etc)!
Now we live in a council house and automatically become labled as 'doleys', lazy etc..etc.
I'm still that proud man and I have nothing to prove to anyone especially when I moved to a council house to look after my family. Should I be forced to find work considering my exemplary service record and my unexpected illness?
My answer is NO dont write somebody like me off OR MY MATE BJ.
