Are video games art?

While gaming may have been accepted as a sport, with various tournaments held worldwide every year, can the wide variety of original styles and designs be considered as art?

If a big shot art critic says it is art then the big crowd will follow and also say it is art...

I am in agreement with what Alex is saying with regards to some games being art.
I believe that dependent upon the genre of the game the art needs to fit that. By that I mean, less polygons and detail for more child-like games or games with little story, e.g platform games (tetris)
However games within the survival horror and RPG genre need to have more fine and realistic detail in order for you to believe what you're seeing and so you feel a part of that world.

As a fan of detailed artwork I am more in favour of saying the latter is art, however I won't say that an artistic mind hasn't gone into the making of the more simpler styles as it is still a visual description of an idea, it's just I have a preference for depth.

Of course they should be considered art and considering if you have Anti-Anilasing turned on 4X to 8X then they look real because you can see the faces and the mouths and the detail of their nose like the vains.

I would agree that some (well more 'most' nowadays, where graphics are being pushed higher and higher with each release) games can be 'RATED' as a work of art, but I wouldn't see it as an 'art form' ('it' being game development).

There are some games out there like Crysis, Timeshift,Metroid Prime 3 that are absolutely beautiful graphics wise but thats just it, I mean, I play games like Bioshock and are blown away by the awesome graphics but I wouldn't really see it up in the tate: modern.

I guess you could call the 'Cell Shaded' games (LoZ: Wind Waker being one of them) a sort of art form in the games category, but I wouldn't compare it to Divinci or something.

I remember sometime ago, just before the PS3 was released in the US, someone (this someone being affiliated with some big games company that I completely forget now) saying that the "PS3 turned gaming into an art form" I guess because of it's stupid amount of power, etc (pile of junk, don't buy one, waste of money blah blah blah they're crap) that allows it to play a hell of a lot of different textures and particles on a nice big screen all at the same time without the expense of framerate, which is pretty impressive, but again, not art.
