While gaming may have been accepted as a sport, with various tournaments held worldwide every year, can the wide variety of original styles and designs be considered as art?
To help you decide, read The Art of Video Games and take a look at the Gaming Art Gallery.
Then tell us what you think below!
lots of people have diffrent opinions. i myself think that it is art, it is created by man for thousands of people to enjoy.... and isnt that wat art is.
I don't think video games are art
There is more contemporary art in one good video game than in the whole of some so called contemporary art galleries.
I love paintings, and I paint in oil, acrylic and watercolour. However, I accept that although some modern paintings may still be regarded as contemporary art, the genre has moved on to include films, pop videos and video games.
In my opinion some modern art galleries have lost the plot, and their exhibits are just not contemporary art.
Of course it's art. I'd rather look at some of the games art than at an ugly Picasso.
Sure, the question of 'what is art?' is going to be subjective when applied to any media - but it's not as if video games don't have any analogues to existing critical darlings (while retaining their own identities). Killer7 is the closest thing to an interactive David Lynch film. Wind Waker was as beautifully presented as any Pixar film. Silent Hill makes even 1990's Jacob's Ladder scarier by examining the themes and visual tropes of Adrian Lyne's film. There are innumerable other examples.
