Should Britain invest in nuclear power?

Government today gave the go-ahead to a new raft of nuclear power stations. With our increasing reliance on expensive imported energy and commitment to reducing carbon emissions, is nuclear the way forward? Or do you think it is too dangerous and environmentally unsound? Should we concentrate on energy efficiency and renewable sources rather than building new power stations? Have your say.

It cost a massive amount of money to build a Nuclear power station. And cost another massive amount of money to decommission.

It makes a fortune in profit for some people and others pick up the bill for decommissioning.

They produce waste that is lethal to all life and remains so for thousands of years and is a massive waste disposal problem.

If there is a serious accident it could make large parts of the uk uninhabitable, and accidents have happened!, in the Nuclear industry.

It is highly efficient, but at what cost.

I think the cost is to high and we should concentrate on green energy sources if we are to survive.

it just goes to show the workings of the leaders of this once proud nation. kielder water is now owned by the spanish, and they sell it to the arabs (apparently, though I could be wrong!) remember when london said that Kielder Dam was a white elephant, and would not put any funds into it's construction? where did the moneys from the sell-off go then. we can't eat sheep from some parts of wales, or some game from around aviemore coz of chernobyl, but that place was run down and poorly maintained and I do not believe any government in this country would allow such a scenario to occur. perhaps, it's also time to look at all the patents which were bought up by oil companies to stifle alternative ideas getting into the marketplace

Apart from 3 mile island of course, no Nulcear Energy has caused no problems in the US. And after from all the leaks its caused no problems in the uk. I don't know weather its a good idea or not as nobody seems to have an estimate of how long the U235 (mainly down under) will last if we did use more nuclear energy. France uses it a lot, but its still only about 20% of their power. U235 will run out at some point same as oil and gas.

Absolutely. It is by far the most efficient way to produce electricity. Forget the costly and inefficient wind and wave power which are merely pandering to the scare mongers who site doom and despondency on the world.
