Should Britain invest in nuclear power?

Government today gave the go-ahead to a new raft of nuclear power stations. With our increasing reliance on expensive imported energy and commitment to reducing carbon emissions, is nuclear the way forward? Or do you think it is too dangerous and environmentally unsound? Should we concentrate on energy efficiency and renewable sources rather than building new power stations? Have your say.

The government needs to set up a think tank for new ideas. With people who will listen and take things that may work on and board.offer an incentive of a few million pounds for the best possible idea thats safe totally green no wast and so on .This will get everyones brains going.Becuase their are clever people out there but can't talk to any one about any ideas its got to be worth a bombe to solve this problem to any power company as it not???????

Peter from St.Albans ;- In this country we have some of the highest rise and fall of tides in the world. We have more than sufficient free power available to run this country's electricity needs for hundreds of thousands of years. We should already be building Hydro Electric generating barrages around our country. In some cases like the Bristol Channel they could also provide road or rail links to reduce the congestion and pollution especially in the Bristol area. The Aswan Dam on the Nile produces 1.2 Gigawatts of power and when first built supplied all of Egypt. And thats just a large river. Just imagine with the advances in technology since then, what sort of power could we expect from several barrages built around this country. NO fuel required and no left over pollution. I agree that wind and wave power are non starters due to the low efficiency, but Hydro Electric power is already proven and we have the out of work manpower to build these generators. And just to emphasise my point the Aswan dam was built by the British.

All you who voted NO please go to your fuse-box and switch off the power. This is how you will have to live without nuclear power. We are running out of fossil fuels and wind / wave power will not get close to meeting our wants. To think that they will is a fantasy - a cosy warm idea, but unfounded in practicality.
The best thing that we can all do is reduce our usage. Get energy saving lights, don't leave the TV on standby or battery chargers plugged in when not in use and so on.
