Should Britain invest in nuclear power?

Government today gave the go-ahead to a new raft of nuclear power stations. With our increasing reliance on expensive imported energy and commitment to reducing carbon emissions, is nuclear the way forward? Or do you think it is too dangerous and environmentally unsound? Should we concentrate on energy efficiency and renewable sources rather than building new power stations? Have your say.

Decommissioning costs of nuclear power plants in 2003 were £40bn, now it is £70bn.
latest idea for spent radioactive waste- dig a massive hole shaft down through the earth and throw it in. this is just about as daft as pumping co2 into the rocks below the sea bed.
New nuclear power stations last year were to cost £2-3bn each, by the time one is allowed to be built in 2015 they will be £5bn each.
The uk has massive potential for wind , wave, tidal and estuary power compared to any other west european country.
150,000 green collared jobs will be created in the future for green energy technolgy.
Less wind turbines will be required in the future due to advances in technology ie. for the same sized turbine in a few years the output mw will double. (remember in the mid 90s, the scare about 10,000 land based wind turbines supplying 10% of electricity).
Microgeneration H2 fuel gas cells combi-boilers have a small generator to produce electricity from waste heat, and these will be available for houses next year .
Passive solar tube panels in roofs heating water, will substantially reduce dependency on gas in combi boilers.
As energy bills will be increasing by 40%, the viability for microgeneration becomes greater especially if more substantial grants are provided.
More Nuclear power will send fuel bills soaring in the future. The availability of plutonium and uranium is in very short supply and costly to produce- it is already at a high price on the commodity markets.
The government has failed to invest in long term investment strategy for renewable energy despite the warnings in the late 90s , this was not helped by the torys scrapping funding for wave/ tidal energy research.

Because with our fossil fuels running low we need an alternative

It is time we stopped burying our heads in the sand! Our current main sources of energy ARE running out and it is time we woke up to the fact that we must seriously look at the alternatives. Nuclear powered energy is one of them.

    Are the govnmnt mad
what will the future generations do with this everlasting waste.
Also the new reactors run hotter and last a shorter time because of it - let alone the risk of catastrophic failure!

Why do they persist in calling them nuclear power stations? They are giant steam engines that turn less than 30% of the reaction into steam. They are also as safe as holding a firework in your hand lighting it and hoping it won't go of.If they could actualy use the reaction we might be cooking on partical acceleration instead of gas. Or has anyone thought of running the reactors hot and separating the water into Hydrogen and Oxegen. We could then have pollution free hydrogen fuel for our cars. Do away with the need for OIl and we can get away from the Americans controling the world economy. Would'nt that make a nice change!
