Government today gave the go-ahead to a new raft of nuclear power stations. With our increasing reliance on expensive imported energy and commitment to reducing carbon emissions, is nuclear the way forward? Or do you think it is too dangerous and environmentally unsound? Should we concentrate on energy efficiency and renewable sources rather than building new power stations? Have your say.
we must use all energy options available and search for new ones otherwise we are leaving ourselves open to the whims of other individuals and countries . ie do not put all your eggs in one basket
JUST ASK YOURSELF THIS, IF CHENOBLE HAD HAPPEND IN BRITAIN WOULD WE STILL BE LIVING HERE,I THINK NOT .
ACCIDENTS CAN NOT POSSIBLY HAPPEN UNTIL THEY DO.
of course considering the other options it is cleaner and safer.
processing at safety is far from that of the 80's and 90's.
do you need to listen so much to the scare-mongering media
A little researched alternative to using uranium is the use of thorium in reactors. Thorium does not have the waste problems of uranium and it can be fed with plutonium cleaning up a problem. However the only country making any research into this type of material is India. This courntry having sold just about everything depends on reasearch done by other countries. I can't see this country developing any alternative type of reactor other than uranium salted even if it would be billions of pounds cheaper.
Should Britain invest in nuclear power? Well it's going down that road in any case so the question is academic.
yes and no
Nuclear waste is a problem, but very little high level waste is produced, a few tons, compared with 1000`s of tons of CO2 A balance of "green" energy , fossil fuels, and 50 or 60% nuclear is needed for a sustainable energy supply.. Forget sending the waste to outer space,
vitrification and deep burial are viable long term solutions available now...
