Do you remember Netscape Navigator in its heyday?

Do you remember Netscape Navigator in its heyday?

Did you use Netscape Navigator in its heyday in the 1990s? Are you surprised that AOL is ditching it? Do you feel that Microsoft was guilty of unfair competition with Internet Explorer during the browser wars? Let us know.

    Netscape was the greatest browser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then AOL took over and it vanished!!!

It was a lot faster than MSIE and the e-mail system was so easy to setup!

Navigator was my browser of choice back in the day, but they lost me as a user when they bundled it with a load of extraneous garbage. Remember, back then RAM and hard drive space was at a premium and all we wanted were small fast programs. Navigator became one of the first pieces of 'Bloatware' that I remember! I won't miss it, Firefox is waaay better.

I was a bit late getting to grips with the WWW and the first graphics browser I used was Mosaic in late 1993. Netscape was a bit of an upstart but should be remembered for innovations such as secure browsing via HTTPS and Javascript for dynamic web sites. It had both long before Microsoft introduced IE.
Unfortunately it made a mess of supporting style sheets and generally got rather bloated, so much so that when the code was given to the Mozilla Foundation it had to be largely re-written.

Firefox is a more than worthy successor to Netscape. IE's technological inadequacies and general backwardness are a big drag on the development of the WWW.

Current statistics on browser usage can be found at
    http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
    among other places.

I have been working on the web and internet for the past twenty years and was around when the first graphic browser became public. Firefox is by far the best browser in so many ways. rather than waste your time in details just download and install it. It has countless useful tools I use on a regular basis. It offers far better security and privacy than Microsofts IE and is a lot easier to customise
