Is obesity contagious?

A recent study has concluded that obesity may be spreading socially through friends and family. Researchers claim that friends of obese people are 57% more likely to become obese themselves.

What do you think? Is it possible for obesity to spread in this way?

    i agree, O&H,
my sis is size 8 and always ill with colds/flu etc.
    i'm a size 20 and perfectly healthy.
she eats absolute crap. i generally live on slim-fast. i attended a slimming club for a whole year, stuck to the diet rigidly, and still managed to come out bigger than i went in. i'm on medication for epilepsy and depression as well as hormones, which all have the side-effect of weight gain. i have also had a baby recently. people gain weight for all sorts of reasons (i used to weigh 7 1/2 stone a few years ago). it's not all about what you eat.

To hear some of you trim size 8's out there, it's all so so simple. Fat people are all lazy good for nothings who shove nothing but crap down their necks, and never work, nor move from the sofa.

    Hello?

I am overweight. Yes it is due to a medical condition that many on here refer to as an excuse. However, I am fit and eat healthly, and I work out at least 4 times a week. Can the same be said of some slim people with no underlying medical conditions, who are able to eat all the pies without gaining an ounce?

    No.

They are still going to pass on bad eating habits to their children, and they will still suffer from medical conditions brought on by obesity (ie cholesterol levels, diabetes, etc)

I know which side I would rather be on, thankyou very much. Better than being hypocrites. Just because the majority 'fat-bashers' on here don't put on weight when they eat that biscuit or pie, doesn't make them holier than thou in critising those with the same eating habits.
