Is obesity contagious?

A recent study has concluded that obesity may be spreading socially through friends and family. Researchers claim that friends of obese people are 57% more likely to become obese themselves.

What do you think? Is it possible for obesity to spread in this way?

Personally I think it is incorrect to refer as obesity as contagious as it is not an infectious disease.

As a doctor, I have heard many excuses for obesity. The term "I have a slow metabolism" is not borne out by any medical literature I am aware of.

There are a minority of people who hae genuine health problems which result in obesity. My father who was always a slim man put 2 stone on when on chemotherapy for lymphoma which included high dose steroids. Thankfully the chemo worked and he has now lost this weight. Poor mobility also results in weight gain.

In the vast majority of obese people, the problem is an imbalance of "food/alcohol in" and energy expenditure. Having said that, a large proportion of obese individuals are "emotional eaters" and thus have a psychological problem with their relationship with food.

Obesity is born out of boredom and unhappiness, both of which are highly contagious!

Why do people who are slim automaticaly think they are healthy because this is not always the case, if you become absalutley obese then yes you are more likley to be unhealthy, there are plenty of overwieght people who reach a ripe old age.A lot of overwieght people suffer fron glandular problems etc. Never think your safe because your slim, theres alot of slim corpses in the grave yard .most overwieght kids or young adults today suffer from the GAME BOY SYNDROME and get hardly any excersize.

don't be silly if somebody is obese, and their friend hangs about with that obese person more, through mental attitudes without realising gets into the same sort of lifestyle and eating habits as the obese person if, a lot of time is spent with the obese
