Are CCTV cameras a waste of money?

CCTV cameras are failing to have an effect on crime, despite the huge amount that the UK has invested in them, a Met chief has claimed. Det Ch Insp Neville claims that criminals aren't afraid of the cameras. We have the most CCTV cameras in the world but is the cost of becoming a surveillance society worth it?

Police Officers do not want to look through CCTV images "because it's hard work". If I told my Boss I dont want to do that because its hard work I'd get sacked.

I don`t think cctv is a waste of money, it`s the laws we have that are a waste of space i`ve nowt to hide and don`t even think of them generally, they are a bit of a distraction on the roads, but if you keep your speed down then they are no problem. I would like to see zero tolerance with some offences,we are to leniant with shoplifters for example, give `em 5 years first offence, likewise car thefts, the law isn`t fair, if i belt you for robbing my house i must use reasonable force, so if the intruder has a knife and i hit him with a baseball bat is that reasonable, i would suggest a faceful of pepper, and kick up the groin, but the courts would probably say i overreacted `cause the poor guy is on heroin and didn`t know what he was doing.

I think all these cameras everywhere are unnessacery and just glamourise crime. I think a lot of these hooligans do things on purpose knowing that it will be caught on camera and possibly used on one of these cctv footage shows that are always on the tv nowadays. I can't think of one crime that has been solved by these cameras. Far from it, I think they actually encourage crime.
