Does the universe have a purpose?

Are we cogs in a vast machine that performs some specific function? Is the universe the result of a random sequence of events or part of a grand scheme? What do YOU think?

    The purpose is to drive the back wheels on my motor. It broke last year and cost me £ 75 quid for a replacement.
