Christmas gadgets Q & A

Festive greetings to one and all!

As you’ve probably worked out, it’s that time of year where we all wonder how we’ll manage through the season of giving.

Thanks for all your questions - I hope I've been able to answer most of them sufficiently.

Next time I'll be answering your queries on setting up your home entertainment systems.
All the best,

Can anyone tell me if the Nintendo DS lite is multi regional ? I am thinking of buying the console in the USA but would be bringing it back to the uk where I would buy games.

    Answer

    LJ says:

Hi Stevie, I love brain training on my DS! I might even post a vid of me screaming through the calculation level as I’ve been told that what I can do is impossible… Right, on to the Nintendo DS compatibility:

You may know that the NDS is already compatible with older style Game Boy Advance cartridges (which fit into slot 2 at the bottom of the device).

Region-wise, generally the NDS is region-free for DS games, but you’ll run into issues with Chinese version games, and if you are playing some multiplayer games against another DS with a different region cartridge – that being said, some titles are OK with this.
    I got this info from

  3. Question

    Audrey from Lancashire:

I have been asked to buy a MP3/4 player and don't know what is the best, should I look at the highest BG's or is there something else I can look for to find out which is the best?

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Audrey,
Thanks for your question. A bit of jargon busting first, methinks. An MP3/4 player does not play three-quarters of everything. MP3 players play music, MP4 players play video, and so MP3/4 players play video and music.

Jargon Bust number 2: Think of the GB (not BG) number as the size of the filing cabinet that stores the music or video in the device. GB stands for GigaByte (How to say this? Well, apparently, fellow anoraks, it doesn’t really matter whether you pronounce the first G in Gigabyte as in “Giant” or as in “Get”, although most UK people use the hard “G”. But I digress.)

Yes, I would look for a large amount of GB– the higher this number, the more songs/videos the device would be able to store. Bear in mind that this will have an impact on the price.

Now, there are as many other options to look for as there are MP3/4 players, but I would personally look for:

battery life if this is going to be used a lot away from home,

size and portability if it’s going to be used for morning runs and exercising,

ease of use if it’s for someone who’s new to this,

and brand name if it’s for a label-obsessive.

    Best of Luck!

  4. Question

    Michelle L from Bedfordshire:

Which is better, an Xbox 360 pro or a PS3 for value and gameplay?
    Thanks.

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Michelle,
Now *this* is a christmassy question! The answer is… either! No, that’s not a copout, it really depends on your preference of what games you want to play. For Role Player Games (RPG), then it’s been said that the 360 has the edge- if you want to shoot Zombies etc, then I’d err on the side of the X-box. If you like driving/singing games, then look at the PS3, which also incorporates a Blu-ray disc player.

To help you decide, here’s a list of all the UK games available on both consoles

    games available on Xbox 360
    www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/catalog.aspx

    games available on sony PS3
    http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/games/

Michelle, both consoles are dangerously hypnotic and I humbly suggest you set regular alarms so you can remember to feed and water yourself – ooh, and turn occasionally to face the sun.

  5. Question

    John from Beckenham:

    Nov 22, 15:13

I have a Packard Bell Desk Top with Windows XP 2nd.Edition plus a new Samsung Lap Top with Windows Vista Home Premium (still in the box) Is it true that I will NOT be able to set them up to the same Belkin Wireless Router as they are not compatible. Thanks AJL

    Answer

    LJ says:

Hi John, If you go here

    www.belkin.com/support/vista/

you can see which Belkin products support Vista and which ones will do soon… Once your network device works with Vista, you should be able to get your XP PCs on the same network– I think it might be interesting transferring files across operating systems though, and would advice that you switch all your PCs over to the same operating system to avoid possible problems.

want to get the inlaws something really cheap without them taking the hint. they asked what ours wanted but said nothing expensive like we ever ask them to do that!! they spend about 5pounds on them at xmas and more on their other grandkids and give them 1o pound for their birthdays. my present a cple of years ago was a dustpan and brush and 2 bars of soap. we always by nice but i feel offended they added the not expensive tag at the end. we never do ask. they have plenty of money and are not short in any way whatsoever.

    Answer

  8. Question

    sam singh from wales:

have been looking at buying my wife a vindaloo curry, could you recommend a restaurant?

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Dear Sam,
Thanks for your question - unfortunately, I'm not in Wales that often, but if you're ever down in London's Oxford Circus, there's a lovely curry house called Kerala in Great Castle Street which specialises in South Indian Cuisine.

Their Beetroot Thoran is incredibly spicy and also delicious.
