Christmas gadgets Q & A

Festive greetings to one and all!

As you’ve probably worked out, it’s that time of year where we all wonder how we’ll manage through the season of giving.

Thanks for all your questions - I hope I've been able to answer most of them sufficiently.

Next time I'll be answering your queries on setting up your home entertainment systems.
All the best,

I LJ, I bought my hubby a laptop for his B/day and set up a Wifi network with my desktop which is running XP,I used a Belkin G+ Nimo, I just followed the wizard and hey presto it worked like magic, but now I am worried that I may not have set it up securely, how can I check it Please.

    Answer

    LJ says:

Dear Lynne, what a great birthday present! I think you mean a MIMO router – is it this one?

If you haven’t got your user manual, download it here:
    http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D9230-4&aid=6131&scid=221

...and follow instructions on Page 58 (WPA Security) which should take you through the security process. Make sure all computers on your network have the encryption keys as well, and your hubby should be surfing safely in no time.

    Hi LJ

I was wondering does iPod Wizard Work on Windows Vista and where can i download Firmware 1.2.2 For the iPod Video?

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Dear Harry,
You’ll get the best info on this from

    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=25208

    – and yes, apparently, the new version will work with Vista. I don’t think this site is directly affiliated to Apple, though, and as with any software downloaded from the net, be sure to scan any downloaded files with your Internet Security Software before doing anything further.

Apple has a support site here as well for downloads:

  3. Question

    Shaun from Tamworth:

I have brought my daughter a nintendo wii for christmas, (well for me realy) and I wanted to know if it will work on a 100htz TV

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Shaun,
let me recommend the Rayman Raving Rabbids series as the must-have Wii game – it’s very, very silly indeed. The Wii uses a sensor bar, which can be placed just above or below your TV display - I believe it won’t matter what Hz TV you use it on, your Wii should work perfectly as long as you calibrate it on set-up.

Have fun and remember to secure the wrist-strap!

  4. Question

    joe from london:

what the difference between ipods and mp3/4 players? which of them is the best buy.

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Joe,
MP3/4 players are portable devices that play music and video.

An iPod is a brand name for an MP3/4 device, much in the same way that a Hoover or a Dyson is a kind of vacuum cleaner, although there are a lot more options for MP3/4 players than vacuum cleaners!

Audrey from Lancashire (on Page 5) also asked about MP3/4 players and which ones to go for - hopefully this answer will help you too. All the best,
    LJ

  5. Question

    Alan from Wickford:

    Nov 24, 18:52

I would like to buy another freeview pvr but i was told that freeveiw was changing to 4MEGH from the 2 which is now and this would mean i and others would have pay again for another lot of idtv's and pvr's

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Alan,
I think you might mean MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, I’m not entirely sure. You could be referring to the recording format of a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) or the format of the compressed signal that Freeview sends to your aerial, which is currently an MPEG-2 stream.

For a very interesting discussion on this which talks about the issues of freeview changing its signal to MPEG-4, have a look here:

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=327451

In practice, I'd imagine it would take a lot of time to switch everything over *again*, so I reckon your freeview products will be quite safe for a while yet.

  6. Question

    brian.binnersley from shrewsbury:

    Nov 24, 17:29

when will "virgin 1" be on "free sat"

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Brian,
As Virgin 1 provides premium programming, paid for both by subscriptions and advertising – similar to the USA’s HBO channel – this means that you’ll probably have to be a subscriber to get this channel, and I don’t think there are any plans to put Virgin 1 on FreeSat at the moment, but this could possibly change in the future.

  7. Question

    Jonathan from Swansea, s.wales:

    Nov 24, 15:46

im getting an ipod nano. on itunes do you have to pay for the songs? and can i transfer my songs another way?

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Jonathan,
iTunes is both an online music store and a programme you run on your computer that talks to your iPod. On the iTunes store, you can expect to pay for each song you download. On the iTunes application, you should be able to transfer music that is already on your computer, (and most music CDs you have purchased) on to your iPod nano.

  8. Question

    Simon from Newcastle:

    Nov 24, 14:53

I want to stream HD around the house- are there any wireless solutions as I don't want cable going from room-to-room?

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Simon,
You can do this the SD way by using a conventional wireless Audio/Video sender like Oneforall’s SV1715

    www.oneforall-int.com/?pag=39&prodnr=85

...which works through the SCART… if you want wireless HD, however, then that might be a bit more interesting, as you generally won't be able to send as much information through a wireless connection. If you watch this space, I might have an answer for you when I get back from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
