Christmas gadgets Q & A

Festive greetings to one and all!

As you’ve probably worked out, it’s that time of year where we all wonder how we’ll manage through the season of giving.

Thanks for all your questions - I hope I've been able to answer most of them sufficiently.

Next time I'll be answering your queries on setting up your home entertainment systems.
All the best,

  1. Question

    Bobby from Swansea:

    Nov 29, 13:41

I have a digital Virgin Box which currently supplies the whole house via coaxial cables. All the TV's in the house are currently analogue, which suggests that the supply from the Virgin box must be analogue. If I was to buy a digital freeview TV this christmas would it still work with the feed from my virgin box via the coaxial cable. Please help. Thank you.

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Bobby,
You sound like the sort of chap people come to when they need some coaxial cable – in my case, most of my world is held together with gaffa tape, and most of my brain is held together with chocolate and Mozart.

Bobby, where does your TV signal come from before going into the Virgin box? Would you be thinking of putting a digital TV in the main room where the set top box is? If that is the case, then you should be fine, as long as you are in a freeview area and your rooftop aerial is halfway decent. Just place your aerial from the roof into the back of the new telly, and off you go. You should still be able to keep your coax cabling with your new telly installed, as it is your V box output that routes your signal everywhere else, and that works from Virgin Media’s cable.

  2. Question

    Russell from Notts:

    Nov 28, 21:43

Can I connect my set top box to my av amp for pro logic sound?

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Russell,
If you have a Digital Coaxial Output (normally Orange!) you should be able to connect your set top box to your av amp. I’d invite the neighbours round so they can’t complain about the thumping bass during the movie action sequences – they might even bring popcorn.

I HAVE WINDOWS VISTA AND I HAVE PUT on IT OFFICE 2007, WHEN I RECEIVE A EMAIL WITH MOVING PICTURES, THE ACTUAL PICTURES WonT MOVE? IS THERE A SETTING WHERE THIS CAN BE CHANGED? IT SQUITE ANOYING. THANKS

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Carl,
Without more info, I won't be able to help properly with this query, however, I think that the reason your pictures aren't moving may be that you haven't got a mini-program like Shockwave, or Quicktime installed - but it could also be that your email restricts some programs from running. If you want to write back with more details, please do.

  4. Question

    John from Birmingham:

I connected an Xbox 360 to my TV using the red grren and blue component leads, brilliant picture but no sound, could you tell me how to get the sound onto the TV. Thanks.

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi John, happy to help.
The red, green and blue component leads carry picture only, so you also need to connect your sound, which is carried in red and white cables called RCA (or Phono) plugs. Next to where you’ve plugged in your component cables on your TV, you should hopefully see “audio in” or something similar. Your xbox 360 probably has an audio out (Phil is this phono or 3.5mm stereo?) use cables like this {insert some kind of image} between your x-box 360 and your TV and, hey presto, you should hopefully not be able to hear yourself think.

  5. Question

    colin from feltham, middx:

    HI LJ
WHAT IS THE OPTIMUM BROADBAND SPEED FOR USE WITH A PS3? WOULD I NOTICE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 2MEG LINE AND 24?

    Answer

    LJ says:

Hi Colin, thanks for your question
According to the forums, your 2MB connection should be more than sufficient, due to the way your PS3 utilises the connection - although your perceived speed will also depend on if you are playing people halfway around the world, or halfway down your street. The faster, the better, I say! Giddy Up!

HI LJ I HOPE THIS IS SEConD TIME LUCKY 4 ME I HAVE A SAMSUNG SH853M DVD RECORDER AND HARD DRIVE PLAYER IS A PROGRAMME AVAILABLE TO MAKE IT MULTI REGIonAL TO BUY OR DOWNLOAD

    Answer

    LJ says:

Hi Stewart, thanks for your email - if you go to somewhere like here:
    http://www.avforums.com

and search their website for region hacks, they might come up with something… Do please bear in mind that sometimes doing this kind of thing to your DVD player can turn it into a doorstop.

  7. Question

    Mike from Hertfordshire:

    Nov 27, 08:46

What features should I look for in a 5.1 surround sound speaker system for the following configuration... A HD ready LCD TV currently connected by scart and HDMI cables to a PS3. The PS3 acts as a DVD and Blueray player so no additional player required. No connection to a Virgin box, as this is in another room. Thanks.

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Mike,
Another great question! Stand by for a 5.1 surround sound guide sometime soon. In the meantime, you’ll be looking for a surround sound system that will take the output from your PS3, which I believe is Digital Optical.

  8. Question

    Fraser Gordon from Edinburgh:

    Nov 26, 22:03

with a TeleWest/Virgin Media 'set-top box' can I record one channel via VHS while watching another? How?

    Answer

    LJ says:

    Hi Fraser,
You can do this, but it would only work if you are watching a terrestrial channel and recording a cable channel or vice versa. The way you set it up is actually set out in my previous column here:

    http://www.virginmedia.com/digital/digitalaunt/qandas6.php

    - if you want to give that a go!
